Paint by Numbers

I felt like writing something sonorous. And what’s more sonorous than a bunch of bass recorders. In this case two basses, great bass, and a contra? My apologies to the contra player, btw, who gets to do a lot of pom-pom-pomming.

This composition has a simple structure, with sections that make their way around the circle of fifths, counter clockwise, hence: paint by numbers. (Ok, if you really want to know, the inspiration for this piece came from a certain sonority somewhere in Mahler’s 4th symphony. Get it? Mahler? Paint?)
